About Us

Thuimai Vizhihal is a Trust for differently abled students. It is located at Azhagusundaram Nagar, near Pykara, Palaganatham, Madurai. This trust was started in June 2013 by the respected Director of the trust, B. Velmurugan B.Lit., B.Ed., M.A., NET, Ph.D., LLB. He is a visually challenged person who has been facilitating the needs of the students with education and accommodation for the past ten years. His unceasing efforts have helped pupils pursue their education in the most reputable colleges. He has always been a giver all his life. His mission towards humanity urged us to contribute to the welfare of underprivileged children. The prime motto of this trust is to change the sympathetic views of people about the differently abled in this society and to provide an opportunity for good-quality education for deserving children.

Thuimai Vizhihal Trust, Madurai, is a registered charitable trust with recognition under the Income Tax Act. It is a well-known helping hand for vision, speech and hearing impaired students from all over Tamil Nadu, especially students who are underprivileged. The trust has been in service since 2013, and each year it helps more than fifty students (school and college) with their education, accommodation, food and medical expenses. It also encourages pupils to equip themselves in extracurricular activities. The trust provides quality education to the children enrolled in the trust and has been functioning as an NGO. The trust works without the help of foreign or government funds and does not receive money from the students.

Students from the trust are studying in various reputed schools and colleges in Madurai, namely Fatima College, Sri Meenakshi Government College for Women, Senthamil College, Royal College of Education, NMS Sermathai Vasan College, Thiagarajar College, Thiagarajar School, Pillaimar Sangam School and C.S.I School. They always use general transport like others. We don’t miss a chance to revitalize them; hence we celebrate all the functions such as Diwali, Christmas, Pongal and Independence Day with our pupils without any religious segregation. For their recreation, the trust arranges educational and recreational tours. All these services are done with the assistance of many compassionate fellow beings.

We are immensely proud of the diverse talents and achievements showcased by the students of our trust. With a commitment to holistic education, our students consistently excel not only in academics but also in sports, music and various other endeavors. Whether it’s mastering complex concepts in the classroom, demonstrating exceptional prowess on the sports field or captivating audiences with their musical talents, our students continually push the boundaries of excellence. Through a nurturing and supportive environment, we empower each student to discover their unique strengths and passions, fostering a culture of success and achievement.

At present, computer skills have become essential for students. To improve their computer knowledge, we use special software such as NVDA and JAWS. With the help of these software programs, students are able to operate computers independently, and it is very helpful for them to download study materials. In addition, our trust has implemented a Braille typewriter training program aimed at equipping students with essential skills for effective communication. The impact of this program is profound, with students experiencing increased confidence and proficiency in their Braille typing skills.

Our students are also trained to play various musical instruments. We train the students to excel not only in academic pursuits but also encourage them to excel in sports. As part of this, every year we conduct various State Level and District Level competitions and tournaments for all differently abled students. Students from our trust have won prizes in various sports competitions. Our trust organized a State Level Competition for college students to commemorate Louis Braille Day. The prize winners were honoured by Padma Shri Solomon Pappiah and Dr. Albert Jodhimani, IRS (Retired Director General of Income Tax) at Loyola College, Chennai.

During the COVID-19 pandemic and various natural disasters, our trust extended its services beyond education to provide essential support to affected communities, especially visually impaired individuals. Through our trust, we distributed bags of rice and essential groceries to visually impaired people. We collaborated with authorities and organizations specializing in disability services to ensure efficient distribution and support for those most in need. In addition to COVID-19 relief, the trust remained proactive during floods and other calamities by providing emergency relief supplies including food, water, shelter materials and medical assistance.

The trust believes in providing enriching experiences for all students. Recreational tours are designed to offer inclusive refreshment opportunities. From the tranquil beaches to the charming boathouses and the delightful climate of Kodaikanal, each tour promises unforgettable moments of joy and exploration. Accompanied by our trained staff, students engage in various activities. Our trust ensures that every student can fully participate and create cherished memories.
